Toni Robinson appointed as Grundon’s risk and sustainability director
Toni Robinson has been appointed the first risk and sustainability director at Grundon.
Robinson first joined the company in 1996 as landfill manager, a role which gradually expanded until she became compliance manager in 2008, taking on responsibility for health and safety. In 2018, she was promoted to head of compliance and joined the senior leadership team. She is now Grundon’s first female director.
Chairman, Neil Grundon, said: “We are all absolutely thrilled that Toni has agreed to join the Board in this new role, which puts sustainability firmly at the forefront of our business.
“Toni’s invaluable knowledge and expertise, especially her understanding across the health, safety and environmental sectors, means her appointment was an obvious and natural choice for us to make.”
The move, which came into effect yesterday (19 August 2024), follows the retirement of Stephen Roscoe from his position as compliance director.
Grundon added: “At the same time, I must pay tribute to Stephen. Together with Toni, he has been key in driving and directing the evolution of the excellent health and safety culture we currently experience in the business, as well as establishing and achieving certification for the integrated management systems and standards – something we are enormously proud of.
“Stephen has played a fundamental role in so many projects, including the establishment of O.C.O Technology, our specialist carbon capture and ash recycling subsidiary. His extensive knowledge, ability to translate legislation and attention to detail will certainly be missed.”
Fire at Greengairs Waste Facility in Airdrie
Police and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) were called to attend a fire at a landfill at the Greengairs Waste Facility in Airdrie, Scotland, at approximately 7:55pm on Sunday (18 August 2024).

The SFRS returned to inspect the scene on Monday (19 August 2024) and no injuries have been reported.
The waste facility is located on Meikle Drumgray Road in Airdrie.
It has been reported that this is the second fire to start at the site this year, with another starting in June.
Fires are a growing problem at waste facilities and in refuse trucks across the UK and public safety bodies have urged consumers to avoid throwing away items that contain embedded batteries as these can spark and cause fires.

Sortera adds new caged tippers to fleet
Sortera has expanded its UK fleet with the addition of new caged tippers.
The tippers can carry up to 1000kg of waste. Assistance from Sortera’s crew with loading the tipper will be included in the hire price.
This marks a period of growth for Sortera which consolidated GBN Services and O’Donovan Waste Management under its umbrella in June – as well as acquiring Reston Waste in July.
Mark McCleery, managing director of Sortera’s UK operations, said: “It’s an exciting time for us as we continue to grow in the UK, both through acquisition, and through expanding our range of services.
“While our primary focus will always be construction waste, our expanded caged tipper offering enables us to diversify into smaller commercial and domestic environments, providing more options for customers.”
Sortera currently operates six depots across greater London, with premises in Tottenham; Harlow; Rochford; Edmonton; Wembley and Uxbridge, while Reston operates from two sites in Wimbledon and one in Epsom.
Paperlink’s Jani Sales to expand tissue production capacity with new PM 2 machine
India-based Jani Sales has increased the capacity of its Sarigam mill at Valsad in Gujarat state to 57,000 tonnes per year through the addition of a virgin fibre-based 21,000 tpy lightweight machine (PM 2) in the third quarter of 2024.
The paper company, a division of Paperlink, said that PM 2 will produce 100% pulp-based tissue in varying grades, including facial tissues, paper napkins, toilet paper and kitchen towels. These products are expected to range from 11.5g/m2 to 42 g/m2 and are meant for both export and domestic sales.
PM 2 will be supplied by tissue machine manufacturer Baosuo, based in Guangdong, China. The line joins Jani Sales’ PM 1, which was provided by Italian designer and manufacturer Toscotec, and produces machine-glazed kraft, poster and tissue.
Originally a paper trader, Jani Sales expanded its offerings with the addition of the paper plant in September 2020, which initially produced 100 tonnes of kraft paper per day.
As of March 2024, the mill produces 28,000 tpy of packaging kraft paper and 8,000 tpy of soft crepe tissue and has a total mill capacity of 36,000 tpy.
