MVV submits plans for EfW plant at Canford

MVV Environment has submitted a planning application for an energy from waste (EfW) facility at Canford Resource Park, Wimborne located within the unitary authority of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole council.

The proposed development would be capable of processing 260,000 tonnes of waste annually and generating 30 MW (gross) of electricity, according to MVV Environment which is the UK arm of German energy company MVV. And, emphasising the local service that the Canford plant could offer, MVV noted that there would be power accessible to local businesses through a private wire connection as well as to the National Grid.

Steam

In addition to electricity generation, the facility would provide approximately 5 MWth of steam to users within the upcoming Magna Business Park development. Furthermore, MVV claims that the plant’s “combined heat and power network can be expanded in the future to cater to the needs of both existing and new users, ensuring a sustainable and flexible solution to meet the growing energy demands of the region.”

Canford Resource Park already has closed landfill and waste processing facilities. As part of its existing operations, the park currently receives residual household waste collected by BCP and Dorset councils for treatment. However, a substantial portion of this waste is then transported back off-site for final disposal.

Region

Paul Carey, managing director of MVV Environment, said: “MVV believes their proposals will provide a more sustainable solution for the management of the region’s residual waste, turning it into useful energy, some of which can be used locally. We look forward to discussing our planning application with the community.”

MVV already has a 265,000 tonnes facility in south west England in Plymouth at Devonport docks and is also currently bidding to develop a facility at Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. The company also has a biomass plant at Ridham in Kent and an EfW plant in Dundee.
