Singh Group acquired by owners of Glazewing

The brothers responsible for building up waste businesses such as Verdant and Polkacrest before selling them on have made a strategic acquisition in East Anglia.

Simon and Jon Miles have taken over Singh (UK) Ltd, which has a turnover of £5 million and operates in March, Peterborough and Whittlesey. The deal was completed on January 31 2011 for an undisclosed sum.

This means Singh is now part of the brothers' Valens Resources Group Plc, which already owns East Anglian-based metals recycling business Glazewing. Singh will be re-branded as Glazewing in the near future.

Singh (UK) Ltd was established in 2001. Its sites at March and Peterborough are fully licensed transfer stations and recycling centres capable of processing up to 100,000 tonnes of inert, non hazardous and hazardous waste per annum. The business has a collection fleet of 25 vehicles including RCVs, tippers and skip loaders and currently employs around 50 staff.

Glazewing Ltd operates from its 10 acre site at West Dereham in Norfolk and a quayside port facility at Wisbech in Cambridge. It currently employs around 80 staff with revenues of £20 million.

Simon and Jon Miles previously owned Polkacrest, a medical waste specialist based in the South East – which is now owned by SITA UK – and Verdant, a national municipal services contractor and waste management business which they later sold to Greenstar. Valens was incorporated in 2008 as a vehicle to acquire Glazewing and develop a regional presence in East Anglia.

The acquisition of Singh Ltd is in line with Valens' strategy of expanding its recycling and waste management activities whilst enhancing its core business of metal recycling. The company plans to create additional operational capacity to the enlarged group's collection capability and operating area.

Simon Miles said: “Singh has an excellent reputation and track record of providing waste management and recycling services in the Peterborough and Cambridgeshire area which complements perfectly Glazewing's existing operational area within East Anglia.

“The acquisition strengthens both our portfolio and service capability with the combined businesses revenues now split approximately 50/50 between metal and waste whilst expanding our materials recycling capacity overall. The additional operating locations will enable us to remodel our fleet profile and collection routes creating efficiencies and synergy savings across the group very quickly.

“We are planning to develop the business further in the near future.”
