Reduced residual waste collection frequency is increasingly on the agenda for Manchester authorities, with neighbouring Bury also having moved to a three weekly collection system in October 2014.
This was followed by Rochdale 12 months later, moving from a fortnightly service for residual waste collection. The three-weekly service sits alongside a three weekly collection of recyclable waste in separate blue and green wheeled bins (green for plastics, cans, tins, foil and glass, and blue for paper and card) and a weekly collection service for food and garden waste. According to the council, recycling rates have risen from around 31% in January 2015 to 49% in January 2016.
Salford council is also looking to move to a three-weekly collection regime for residual waste.
