Under the terms of the extension, Neales will manage and operate both Preston and Middleton waste transfer stations – with each facility processing between 50,000 to 60,000 tonnes of residual and recyclable household waste per year.

The Blackburn-based business was originally awarded two six-year contracts to operate the transfer stations in 2010, and created a new division ‘Neales Direct Services’ to manage the sites. It aims to deliver up to £1 million of savings over the lifetime of the contract, through improved efficiency and materials management.
Neales recruited 20 new members of staff and spent an estimated £500,000 on new equipment, including six utility trucks and security systems, to manage the contract. Operating across the North West, the company now employs 140 people across 10 sites.
