Calliafas to chair government’s WEEE advisory group

Minister Malcolm Wicks has appointed Peter Calliafas to chair a new influential group to advise government on the progression of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations.

A former banker with Barclays Bank and advisor to government on waste technologies and renewable energies, Mr Calliafas will lead the independent body as of the start of this month.

With 13 members including its chair, the new group is expected to have its first formal meeting in January.

Other members of the body include representatives from electronics producers, retailers, producer compliance schemes, waste management firms, reprocessors and re-use organisations.

Announcing the group, Mr Wicks said: “Since the UK adopted the WEEE Directive a great deal has been achieved, by making sure more waste is collected for treatment and recovery. The establishment of the advisory body will ensure we receive expert advice and to help us build on this initial success. I very much look forward to working with them in the future.”

Members

The full list of members of the WEEE Advisory Body was as follows:
Peter Calliafas (Chair) – Non-executive chairman of Envirobusiness South East Ltd, until recently executive director of gasification firm Tetronics Ltd
Julie-Ann Adams – joint managing director of M Baker Recycling Ltd
Joy Boyce – Head of corporate environmental affairs, at Fujitsu Services,
Phil Conran – general manager recycling development at Biffa;
Jonathan Gorman – regulatory policy manager, Tesco;
Gary Griffiths – environmental & quality systems manager, RDC;
John Holbrow – non-executive chairman of Pollution Monitors Ltd;
Leigh Holloway – environmental consultant, eco3;
Terry Maguire – chairman and managing director of Computer Remarketing Services;
Kirstie McIntyre – environmental takeback compliance manager, Hewlett Packard;
John Morrell – environmental consultant, Oakdene Hollins;
Philip Morton – chief executive officer, REPIC;
Mark Shelton – waste promotions manager, Donarbon Waste Management.

Commenting on his appointment as chair of the group, Mr Calliafas said he intended his group to be an “effective and action-oriented team that is focussed on the priority objectives.”

He said it would be important for the members of the WEEE Advisory Body to get up to speed quickly on the issues facing the producer responsibility system.

“In my view, there is only one way to achieve this, and that is through engagement with all stakeholders and visits to key sites in order to appreciate the operational processes first hand,” Mr Calliafas said.

Independent

Mr Wicks' Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) has said the new advisory group will be fully independent of government, an arms-length group that will set its own agenda.

As such, it could form sub-groups to investigate certain issues, such as a possible move towards encouraging more individual producer responsibility in WEEE.

BERR said appointments to the group will be for two to three years, and that members will represent key areas within the WEEE chain, or certain fields of expertise, rather than the companies or organisations for which they work.

Mr Calliafas will receive a £5,000 fee as chairman, but otherwise the members of the group will be unpaid, aside from their travel expenses.
