The FM2 multifuel plant at Ferrybridge, which has been developed by SSE and Wheelabrator, has received its first deliveries of refuse derived fuel (RDF) as the plant enters hot commissioning.
Located on the same site as Ferrybridge Multifuel 1 in West Yorkshire, Ferrybridge Multifuel 2 power station will have the capacity to treat up to 675,000 tonnes of waste derived fuels per year.
Yorkshire-based AWM Waste Management has a 150,000 tonnes per year fuel supply agreement for the plant, which commenced this week with AWM vehicles delivering the first loads this week.
Hot commissioning commences shortly and AWM will provide a continuous supply during the commissioning period.
Tim Shapcott, commercial director UK at AWM, said: “AWM has a long-standing relationship with SSE, supplying Ferrybridge Multifuel 1 since 2016. In 2017 the business successfully concluded a deal with Bradford Metropolitan district council to treat, manage and utilise thermal recovery for the 164,000 tonnes of waste over the 15-year life of the contract.
“Ferrybridge Multifuel 2 has always been at the centre point of this contract and to be present at the very first delivery today was unprecedented.”
In November 2018, AWM was acquired by the Beauparc Utility Group (see letsrecycle.com story).
Eamonn Hanley, UK Logistics and operations director for Beauparc UK, said: “The supply of waste for energy to FM2 enables AWM to provide customers with a highly sustainable thermal offtake. To support the commencement of this contract we are progressing well with a £2.5 million vehicle rollout project. We have introduced all new Euro 6 tractor units that will haul fuel to Ferrybridge and new trailers with hydraulic netting systems.
“The 14-mile journey to Ferrybridge started at our facility at Stourton, South Leeds. Watching the five-vehicle convoy departing the site this morning was a proud moment and as a business we’re exceptionally pleased to be working in partnership with Multifuelenergy.”
This year’s RDF conference, organised by letsrecycle.com and the RDF Industry Group will be held on 28 November 2019. More details here.
