EXCLUSIVE: Council-owned business Bristol Waste is looking to roll out commercial waste collections, following news that it has won a 10-year contract to provide waste services in the city.

Bristol Waste Company has this week been announced as the long-term collection contractor for household waste from the city – and looks set to target a greater proportion of commercial work

Bristol Waste Company – which operates at arm’s length to Bristol city council – is seeking a commercial development manager to deliver ‘profitable’ and ‘sustainable’ business growth.

Plans

Bristol Waste Company told letsrecycle.com that the commercial sector has a “part to play” in the company’s plans for the city.

In a statement the company said: “Having just been awarded a 10-year contract with Bristol city council to deliver ‘municipal’ waste services for the city, this will be the major current area of focus for Bristol Waste Company. However we recognise that there may be opportunities to develop a commercial business and we will be considering our options and market strategy for this in the coming months.”

The company has also said it will be seeking ‘other commercial opportunities’ to expand its service, and is seeking staff with ‘significant experience’ in the commercial waste services sector.

Commercial

The position on councils and council-owned companies targetting commercial waste work has been under spotlight in recent months – with a judicial review filed challenging the status of local authorities as exempt from charging VAT on collections. The case, which was received the support of private sector associations, is ongoing (see letsrecycle.com story).

In London local authorities are being encouraged to join a partnership organisation – London Business Waste & Recycling –  to help them win commercial waste work, as a means of supporting income for other services (see letsrecycle.com story).

Bristol Waste Company’s award of the 10-year integrated waste services contract in Bristol came after the city cancelled its contract with Kier in June 2015 – three years earlier than planned – due to falling recycling rates (see letsrecycle.com story). Bristol Waste Company had been in charge of waste services in the city for 12 months, following the cancellation of the contract.
