Industry gears up for RWM 2015
RWM is expected to attract 13,000 visitors this year

The circular economy is due to take centre stage at this year’s RWM in partnership with CIWM, which takes place from 15-17 September at the NEC in Birmingham.

The exhibition, renowned as Europe’s largest event for resource efficiency and waste management, is this year expected to attract 700 exhibitors and 13,000 visitors. In addition there will be a jam-packed programme of 70 seminars on a broad range of topics ranging from energy from waste and food recycling to local authority recycling.

With the revised EU circular economy package due to be announced this Autumn, Karl Falkenberg, environment director general at the European Commission, who has played a pivotal role in drafting the proposals, will address RWM delegates with a keynote speech on the subject.

Mr Falkenberg has an instrumental role in developing the revised circular economy package. The consultation on proposed measures includes production and consumption, markets for secondary raw materials, sector-specific actions and enabling factors for the circular economy, including investment and incentives.

The circular economy will also feature in the form of a new Circular Economy Connect Zone and theatre sponsored by SUEZ (formerly SITA UK). Speakers are set to include Helga Vanthournout of McKinsey & Company; SUEZ UK recycling chief executive David Palmer-Jones; Viridor chief executive Ian McAulay and Zero Waste Scotland chief executive Iain Gulland.

Elsewhere, the Energy from Waste theatre will address subjects including UK and European government policy and investment; gasification technology and RDF exporting to mainland Europe.

And, the Local Authority Theatre will host debates on issues including waste regulations, resident engagement, plastics recycling and minimising food waste. Mat Crocker, deputy director of illegals and waste at the Environment Agency and Linda Crichton, head of resource management at WRAP are among those due to speak.

The show, supported by new chairman Barry Dennis, is this year introducing a dedicated area on the show floor, the RWM Launchpad. This enables start-ups with game-changing business ideas to showcase products and services to an industry audience of over 13,000 professionals. Other must-see areas of the show include the handling and logistics zone; recycling and reprocessing technologies zone; energy from waste zone; professional services; and, machinery and equipment.
