Incoming Agency chief says EA ‘can be proud’

Phillip Duffy, who was announced as Sir James Bevan’s replacement as Environment Agency (EA) chief executive last week, has said the regulator “can be proud” of its work under its current CEO.

Mr Duffy made the comment following the announcement of his appointment on 16 March.

He will start the role on 1 July, replacing Sir James Bevan who is planned to step down as chief executive on 31 March after over seven years in the role. The EA’s executive director for local operations John Curtin be interim chief executive, the regulator said.

On his appointment, Mr Duffy said: “I am delighted to be taking on leadership of the Environment Agency. The Agency’s mission – to protect and enhance the environment and support sustainable development – has never been more critical. ­

“The Agency can be proud of its record. And as it approaches its 30th anniversary, I look forward to hearing from all sides about what should come next, and what more the Agency could do to make this the first generation to leave the environment in a better state than it inherited.”

Treasury

Phillip Duffy is currently the director-general for growth and productivity at the Treasury. He oversees its work on spending and policies to create “sustainable growth across the UK”. He also serves as accounting officer for the Royal Mint Trading Fund.

The Agency explained that as chief executive, Mr Duffy will lead the EA’s work in tackling some of the biggest challenges facing the environment, from climate change and extreme weather events through to improving the health of England’s waters for the benefit of people and wildlife.

‘Excited’

Commenting on Mr Duffy’s appointment, EA’s chair Alan Lovell, added: “We’re very excited to have Philip joining the Environment Agency. As climate change and population growth increase the pressures on England’s precious resources, we have a vital role delivering for people, nature and the economy. Philip brings considerable experience from the Treasury and will head up a truly excellent executive team.”

Mr Lovell continued that the board and him are “grateful” to Sir James for his leadership and “look forward to building on strong foundations to help the Environment Agency deliver even more in the years to come”.

Environment Secretary Thérèse Coffey also thanked Sir James for his service and congratulated Mr Duffy on his appointment.
