Waste management firm HW Martin has increased its foothold in the North East with the purchase of the commercial and industrial waste business of Durham-based Premier Waste.
The purchase which was for an undisclosed sum – is intended to help strengthen HW Martins commercial waste interests in the region and will see it taking over several depots previously run by Premier as well as a materials recycling facility (MRF) at Washington, Tyne and Wear.
HW Martin intends to operate the commercial and industrial waste assets under the banner Premier Waste Recycling Ltd.
A spokesman for HW Martin, which is headquartered in Derbyshire, told letsrecycle.com that the acquisition of the commercial and industrial (C&I) waste assets would lead to a significant increase in the companys work in this sector. HW Martin already runs a C&I waste service in Warwickshire.
Furthermore, the purchase will help to double HW Martins sorting and treatment capacity for all waste streams in the North East. HW Martin currently operates its own MRF also on Tyne and Wear at Washington.
HW Martin already has representation in the region after being awarded a joint contract in May 2010 by Gateshead and South Tyneside councils to sort 25,000 tonnes of dry recyclable material each year (see letsrecycle.com story).
HW Martin also currently provides kerbside residential recycling collections, material sorting and household waste and recycling centre management for a number of other local authorities.
Commenting on the acquisition of Premiers C&I business, a statement released by HW Martins parent company Martin Group said: Over the past 14 years, Premier Waste Management has grown to become the North Easts largest waste management and recycling business.
The acquisition of its commercial collection and recycling division by the Martin Group of Companies brings with it the investment required to realise the companys expansion potential.
A spokesman for Premier Waste Management said that, following the sale of its C&I assets, the firm would continue to operate its landfill business, civic amenity sites, green waste composting and its PARC aerobic digestion plant at Tursdale.
