The Perth facility has been in production since September 2024 and has a capacity of over 650,000 fridges processed every year.
Part of GAP Group North East, GAP Alba will bring the group’s overall fridge processing capacity to 1.3 million fridges – 40% over the UK’s total annual requirement.
First Minister of Scotland John Swinney said: “Scotland’s transition to net zero is not only a moral obligation, but can provide economic opportunities to communities across the country.
“The opening of GAP Alba’s new facility is an excellent example of this, bringing over 50 good, green jobs to the local area.
“It is a tangible benefit of our efforts to tackle the climate crisis, and aligns with my government’s mission to ensure Scotland is at the forefront of the green tech revolution.”
The facility is designed to have a 100% net zero carbon footprint due to being powered by Binn Ecopark’s own renewable energy grid.
The Ecopark is operated by Binn Group – one of Scotland’s largest independent waste management companies – and is home to the new GAP Alba facility.
Binn will also assist with the safe disposal of outputs such as fridge gasses and PUR (polyurethane) to be used as Energy from Waste (EfW).
Peter Moody, group chief executive of GAP Group North East, parent company of GAP Alba its Scottish arm, said: “This is a hugely significant milestone for GAP Alba, and all our partners as we look to provide the most environmentally sound and technologically advanced solution to fridge reprocessing in Scotland and the UK.
“I’m honoured that our environmentally focused growth plans have dovetailed perfectly with Scotland’s desire to be on the front foot with their net zero commitments and wider green obligations. The fact that First Minister John Swinney is attending in person says it all.”
