Entries invited for Real Nappy Week awards

The Women's Environmental Network has launched an award which will recognise organisations who work in partnership to promote the use of real nappies.

The awards follow the success of Real Nappy Week, which is jointly organised by the Women's Environmental Network's Real Nappy Project, the Real Nappy Association and the National Association of Nappy Services (NANS). The week focuses attention on the environmental impact of nappies and raises public awareness of the availability of convenient shaped and fitted modern cloth nappies and nappy laundry services.

The Women's Environmental Network is now inviting applications for the Real Nappy Week Awards 2002 – Celebrating Working Partnerships, which aim to recognise the importance of partnership in achieving waste prevention. The awards ceremony will take place on April 25 as part of Real Nappy Week which starts on April 22.

Nappies are responsible for 4% of household waste in the UK and make up 50% of the waste from a household with just one baby. Hospitals, local authorities and businesses are now working together in real nappy partnerships. For example, Oldham Hospital launched a real nappy scheme in January 2001 in partnership with Oldham Borough Council. The council-funded scheme offers parents the choice of putting a disposable or a hospital laundered nappy on all new-born babies at Oldham Hospital.

Other initiatives include the award-winning West Sussex Real Nappy Initiative which offers financial incentive to users of cloth nappies and Kent County Council operates a real nappy scheme in partnership with the local Health Authority, nurseries and local businesses

Paul Burstow MP will head a panel of judges and host the awards ceremony at the House of Commons. Catherine McCormick, head of midwifery at the Department of Health, Gillian Neville of the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Tracey-Ann Evans, acting director, Strategy, Research and Communications, Small Business Service at the Department of Trade and Industry and Ann Link, co-ordinator of Women's Environmental Network will complete the judging panel.
