Currys ups incentives to tackle e-waste crisis

Currys has announced that anyone dropping off old electricals at its stores will receive at least a £10 voucher towards a £50 minimum spend, as part of its Cash for Trash Initiative.

The offer will run from 11 June to 8 July this year, and customers can recycle any tech with a plug or battery, regardless of where it was purchased. This compares to the usual ‘always-on’ offer of at least £5 off a £25 minimum spend.

Customers with higher-value items can still access trade-in deals, meaning they’ll receive either the trade-in value or the guaranteed £10 voucher.

Items collected are either repaired, refurbished, harvested for parts or responsibly recycled. Underpinning this is Currys’ repair and recycling operation in Newark, Nottinghamshire.

‘Better for the planet’

Paula Coughlan, chief people, communications and sustainability officer at Currys, said: “We are thrilled to be doubling our flagship Cash for Trash offer for the first time ever. This limited-time promotion not only incentivises customers to recycle their old tech but also helps tackle the growing e-waste crisis in the UK.

“We’re proud to be helping customers save, while making sure their unwanted tech is processed responsibly. It’s better for us, better for customers and better for the planet to help keep tech in the hands of the people that need it for as long as possible.”
