Yorkshire-based container manufacturer MGB Plastics has secured a contract to provide 45,000 new wheeled bins to be used as part of Cheshire East councils overhaul of its waste and recycling collection service.

The firm, which manufactures the bins at its Rotherham factory, has already begun directly rolling out the containers to households in the local authority area, as part of the councils plans to save over 1 million a year on its collection costs.
The unitary authority is currently moving towards a new uniform three bin system, replacing the three different systems used in each of the borough councils it was established from in April 2009 (see letsrecycle.com story). The new service is set to be formally introduced next week (May 9).
The bins being rolled-out to householders by MGB are silver and have a 240 litre capacity. They will be used to collect recyclables – including paper, glass, Tetra Paks, cans, foil, aerosols and plastics – commingled.
Householders will also use a bin for garden waste and another for residual material, with collections being carried out on an alternate weekly basis and recyclables sent to UPMs Shotton materials recycling facility for sorting.
Roll-out
The roll-out is the first time MGB Plastics has worked with Cheshire East council to provide its wheeled bins and services. The first of the bins, which will be delivered to homes in Crewe, Nantwich and Macclesfield, have already started to arrive.
Conor Sugrue, general manager at MGB Plastics, said: We are delighted to be supporting and working alongside Cheshire East council and playing our part in helping them achieve their recycling targets.
Our aim as a provider of waste management products is to provide solution in tackling the UKs recycling rate and this contract is a great example of this in action.
As a business we want to become the number one provider of waste management products by choice for all local authorities and private operators and this contract is a further example of this.
The contract with Cheshire East represents MGB Plastics third major local authority contract success in recent months, having recently supplied 25,000 of its new-shaped 240 litre bins to Cheltenham borough council as part of a new waste collection scheme.
Previously it provided over 50,000 new wheelie bins to homeowners across Kent and Hertfordshire.
