Construction complete at Stoke clinical waste plant

Recovered fuels business Andusia has reported that the Stoke hazardous waste plant, for which it holds a long term supply contract, has reached construction completion.

Andusia has announced that construction work is complete at the new Stoke clinical and hazardous waste plant

Andusia, which is based in Hertfordshire and is best known for RDF exports, explained that the facility at the Scotia Road Business Park, Tunstall, Stoke is the largest single line clinical waste plant built in the UK for 20 years.

It described the development of the Stoke clinical waste plant as “creating a state-of-the-art facility to treat clinical and other hazardous waste streams safely and effectively, whilst generating electricity that will be put into the local grid.”

Contract

Andusia has a long-term contract in place to supply up to 16,000 tonnes of hazardous and clinical waste per annum, making it the sole waste supplier.

The facility will begin to accept waste at the end of April 2022 – around nine months later than originally planned – for the commissioning stage, with the plant to be fully operational “in the summer months”.

Andusia already supplies a hazardous and clinical waste treatment plant in Malvern, Worcestershire which started accepting waste last year. Andusia is the sole supplier to Malvern, supplying 8,000 tonnes of hazardous and clinical waste per year.

Both the Stoke and Malvern plants have been developed by Waste Energy Power (WEP) Partners.

Biomass

The Stoke project is a redevelopment and repurposing of a previous biomass power generation facility. Waste heat will be recovered from the treatment process and used to generate electricity to power the facility, as well as heating water to clean the clinical waste receptacles. During full operation, the facility will be electrically self-sufficient and excess electricity will be exported to the local electricity distribution network, Andusia has said.

Structure

Andusia has explained that Stoke Operations Limited (SOL) has been awarded a five-year contract to operate and maintain the facility once operational. The facility will be owned by Clinitek (Stoke) LLP. Waste Energy Power (WEP) Partners are the appointed party to deliver the ongoing management services function of the project on behalf of the owner, Clinitek (Stoke) LLP. WEP Partners will sit between Stoke Operations Limited and Clinitek (Stoke) LLP, covering project, technical and commercial management functions.
