Community sector and councils bond together

An agreement will be signed next week by the Community Recycling Network and the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee to cement relations between them.

Andy Cunningham, the CRN chair, and Janet Westmoreland, the chair of LARAC, will sign the 'memorandum of understanding' at the start of the CRN's 13th annual conference in Birmingham.

Mr Cunningham said: “It is import that we work in concert to achieve common goals. It makes sense for our sectors to share information and progress strategies to achieve the best for environment and community.”

The agreement has been made in order to encourage local authorities and the community sector to work together more closely to reach targets laid out in the government's waste strategy.

LARAC chair Janet Westmoreland explained: “There are many examples of local authority and community sector partnerships which together achieve greater success than they could do alone. This document recognises the value of such partnerships.”

The two organisations will share information and consult each other on nationwide proposals and initiatives with regular meetings held to maintain and improve communication.

Ms Westmoreland said: “It is good to put a formal context to our joint aims and recognise the fact that the contribution made to recycling by the community sector is crucial to achieving the recycling standards.”
