Bodens scoops £1.3m Cardiff HWRC wood contract

Cardiff council has awarded Greater Manchester-based Boden & Davies Ltd a £1.3 million contract for the collection and onward recycling of waste wood from its household waste and recycling centres (HWRCs).

The RPS will expire on 1 October 2024 and could be withdrawn before then if sampling and testing is not forthcoming

The council told letsrecycle.com that around 65% of the material will be used in the panelboard sector with Kronospan, while the remaining 35% will go to alternative sources.

Kronospan takes a large amount of wood from across the UK for its facility in Chirk, North Wales, where it operates a particleboard and medium density fibreboard (MDF) manufacturing plant.

Value

Bodens saw off two other bidders for the work, tender documents show.

The contract was published this week (3 January) and will run for an initial two years, with the option for a further year.

It is valued at £1,320,000 and will cover approximately 8,000 tonnes of material per year.

Cardiff explained that the award of the contract takes into account value for money as well as maximum recycling recovery “to help meet the statutory recycling targets”. A spokesperson for the council told letsrecycle.com that “in their tender, the company advised the council that around 65% of Cardiff’s wood will be recycled back into wood products”.

They added: “The contract was awarded on the basis of the quality of the submission, the recycling and recovery rate offered, as well as the price.”

Cardiff has an estimated population of 362,000 people. According to My Recycling Wales, it has a recycling rate of 58%, which is below the Welsh average of 65%.
