The arrangement sees Biffa transport, process and sell dry mixed recyclables derived from Guildford and Reigate & Banstead borough councils at its materials recycling facility (MRF) in Edmonton, north London.
The contract includes processing Guildford’s 14,500 tonnes per year single-stream dry mixed recycling, comprising of paper and card, glass, mixed plastics and cans.
Another 6,000 tonnes of dry mixed recycling will come from Reigate & Banstead, comprising of glass, mixed plastics and cans, from the council’s two-stream collection service. Paper and card are collected separately and managed via DS Smith.
Viridor
Biffa took over the council contracts from Viridor in September, which had previously processed Guildford’s recyclables at Crayford in Kent and Reigate & Banstead’s material at its Milton Keynes MRF.
Commenting on the award decision, Ian Muir, recycling officer at Reigate & Banstead council, said both councils would like to acknowledge the ‘professional service’ provided by Viridor since 2015.
Partnership
Reigate & Banstead and Guildford are part of the Surrey Waste Partnership, but are not among the councils looking to consolidate waste services across the county.
However, both councils have worked to jointly procure the recycling contract, which is expected to last up to 2021.
