The fire was reported by the site’s team to Kent Fire and Rescue Service early on Friday (11 July 2025) morning – just before 6am.

Local residents took to social media to describe pillars of smoke billowing from the centre, which is located in an industrial estate in Medway, Kent.

Following the incident, a spokesperson for Viridor said: “There are no further details available as to cause or damage sustained at the moment, but we will update as further information becomes available.

“We are thankful to the Kent Fire and Rescue Service for their swift support.”

The fire service sent a total of four fire engines and a height vehicle to attend the blaze, with the incident being declared closed at 21:05.

Three fire engines and a height vehicle remained in attendance to check for hotspots.

The crews used main-jets and ground monitors to contain the fire.

The KFRS Volunteer Response Team was also in attendance to support crew welfare.

Advice to residents

Local residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed due to the smoke. This warning was in place until 6pm on Friday.

The recycling centre is located at Clipper Close in Rochester.
