Alcan cuts used aluminium can prices again

The weakening non-ferrous market has prompted Alcan Aluminium Can Recycling to again cut the price it pays for used aluminium beverage cans (UBCs). From October 1 the price is reduced by 30 across the board. Alcan says the decision was taken “in the light of the continuing decline in prices of primary and secondary aluminium”.

Prices for UK UBCs conforming to specification and delivered to one of Alcan's seven regional processing centres have been reduced to:

  • Loose whole cans 600 per tonne
  • Loose and flattened 650 per tonne
  • Baled or densified 700 per tonne

Rick Hindley, national manager for Alcan Aluminium Can Recycling, said: “We have reluctantly had to reduce our trade price in the light of the fall in the market price for aluminium. However, trade suppliers should be encouraged by the fact that aluminium's share of the drinks can market shows growth, with 74.5% of cans on sales being made of aluminium. Sales of aluminium cans to the end of August 2001 are up 10% on last year.”

Mr Hindley added: “In particular, aluminium's share of the beer market has increased significantly, up 14.4% I the year to date, and its share of the soft drinks market has incresaed 7.2% in the same period.”
