The plant has been installed by ScotAsh, a joint venture between Lafarge Cement and ScottishPower. Support for the project has come from the Scottish Industrial Symbiosis Programme, a Scottish Executive scheme that aims to improve resource efficiency and productivity in industry.
Commenting on the new plant, Scotland's deputy enterprise minister Lewis MacDonald said: “The Executive's top priority is sustainable development: growing the economy, and at the same time protecting the environment. This new facility puts Scotland at the leading edge of international recycling technology. This is good news for the economy and good news for the environment.”
The new plant will include state of the art blending and packing facilities as well as storage silos capable of holding 10,000 tonnes of pulverised fuel ash. The site will also have outloading facilities, weigh bridges and new office buildings with the latest weighing, delivery and invoicing systems.
ScotAsh production manager, Allan Harding said: “This investment will help to ensure ScotAsh remains at the forefront of the pulverised fuel ash market.”
The first of its kind outside the USA, the facility at Longannet Power Station in Kincardine, Fife, will separate unburned coal from the ash electrostatically, allowing the coal to be re-used.
Cement from the new plant will be sold to markets including the construction, plastics, marine and oil sectors, as well as in waste stabilisation and land regeneration.
