A household recycling centre in Powys has been forced to remain closed following what council officials have described as a “highly unusual and serious” break-in.

Powys County Council confirmed that the Household Recycling Centre at Lower Cwmtwrch will remain shut while police investigations and a major clean-up operation continue at the site.

It is suspected that skips and waste material was taken from the site.

The facility was initially closed after the incident resulted in the theft of equipment and extensive disruption to operations.

Police officers are currently carrying out forensic investigations, while stolen stock must also be replaced before the site can safely reopen.

The theft is believed to have taken place over two separate periods: between 6pm and 10pm on Monday, 8 June, and again between 3pm and 9.30pm on Tuesday, 9 June.

Commenting on the closure, Councillor Richard Church, Powys County Council’s Cabinet Member for Legal and Regulatory Services, said: “This has been a highly unusual and serious incident, and I fully understand the inconvenience this will cause for residents who rely on the Lower Cwmtwrch recycling centre.

“We are working closely with the police and our contractor to ensure the site is made safe, fully restored before it reopens.

“It is important that we take the time to do this properly so that we can minimise the risk of anything like this happening again.

“In the meantime, I would like to thank residents for their patience and understanding. Bryson Recycling, which operates the site on behalf of the council, has also expressed its apologies.”

Residents who had pre-booked appointments at the site have been contacted directly by the council.

Authorities said arrangements are in place to reopen the facility as soon as possible, but stressed that a full restoration of the site is required before services can resume.

In the meantime, residents requiring access to recycling services have been advised to use the household recycling centre in Brecon.

Powys County Council apologised for the inconvenience caused and said further updates would be provided as work progresses and a reopening date is confirmed.
