The Woodhorn Group has signed an eight-year deal with Biffa to process green waste in West Sussex.

The contract will see Woodhorn handle up to 30,000 tonnes of material from households and household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) each year, with the potential to increase to 40,000 over the duration.

It marks an extension of the company’s ongoing partnership with Biffa.

Morgan Davies, Materials Recycling Director at The Woodhorn Group, said: “We are delighted to be continuing to work with the Biffa and West Sussex County Council teams to help responsibly recycle local green waste and create eco-friendly soils and composts which can be moved back into the economy.”

Green waste to be recycled into compost and soil products

Under the agreement, all green waste will be recycled into PAS100, Compost Quality Protocol (CQP) and Soil Association approved composts, soil conditioners and topsoils.

The Woodhorn Group operates two composting sites in West Sussex, processing garden and green waste. The facilities use open-air windrow systems to turn organic material into compost and soil products.

Each year, the company diverts almost 100,000 tonnes of green waste from landfill across its facilities. Between 15,000 and 20,000 tonnes of compost and soil products are expected to be output through the company’s retail division.

The remaining compost is sold to housebuilders, sports pitch contractors, groundworks companies and landscapers for large scale commercial projects.

Mike Thair, Biffa’s Director of Business Development and Treatment, added: “Our renewed partnership with The Woodhorn Group will continue to provide residents with a sustainable route for their green waste while supporting the council’s climate and sustainability strategies and our own commitments to net zero and the circular economy.”

Biffa partnered with the West Sussex County Council to launch a Waste Prevention Community Grant Fund in January 2025 for group initiatives to reduce household waste at a local level.
