The visits are scheduled to begin from January 15, 2024, and span through February and March.
HSE NI said inspectors will assess the presence of adequate procedures for safe isolation and lock-out of equipment. Additionally, they will review the measures in place to ensure that both routine and non-routine maintenance activities can be conducted safely.
‘Major risk’
Brian Pryce, principal inspector at HSENI, said: “Machinery guarding, isolation and maintenance activities remain a major risk for the sector. Our key message is to prevent access to dangerous parts of machinery, and to develop, implement and supervise appropriate procedures for carrying out maintenance (i.e. isolation and lock-out).
“Our Inspectors will be checking that adequate arrangements are in place to guard dangerous moving parts of work equipment, and that suitable procedures are in place to safely complete both routine and non-routine maintenance.”
Guidance
During the inspection drive, HSENI inspectors will offer information and guidance to support compliance. However, in cases where substantial risks are identified, enforcement action may be taken to ensure adherence to health and safety regulations and proper risk management.
Operators within waste premises are encouraged to access the inspection pro-forma that will be utilised by inspectors during these visits.
