Ealing council to continue with Terracycle trial

Ealing council has pledged to continue its trial with Terracycle in spite of a BBC Panorama documentary last week which questioned the scheme’s effectiveness.

The programme looked at green credentials of the recycler, which provides residents with an opportunity to recycle hard-to-recycle items, such as biscuit wrappers and crisp packets.

While Blackburn with Darwen council decided to halt its trial in light of the controversial documentary, Ealing council is set to continue.

The trial started on 23 May and will run until 30 November. Residents are to drop off their bagged and labelled items at their local household waste and recycling centre (HWRC).

A spokesperson for Ealing council told letsrecycle.com: “Confidence in the recycling process is vital for the council and we will continue to work with Terracycle to ensure that this trial adheres to our highest standards and that due diligence is followed at all times.

“We will be listening carefully to feedback from residents and we will only consider adopting this recycling process if the trial successful and meets our high standards.”

A million ‘get the message’ to Recycle Right

The Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority (MRWA) estimated that its Recycle Right campaign to help boost recycling across the Liverpool city region has been seen over a million times.

Launched in October 2021 and run through into March 2022, adverts reminding people of what should be recycled could be seen throughout the region on buses, local radio and newspapers, digital outdoor displays and social media.

The advertising is part of Merseyside Recycling & Waste Authority’s (MRWA) Recycle Right campaign which was launched in 2018 to help increase awareness of recycling issues, including preventing bagged waste and unwanted materials in recycling bins.

Carl Beer, chief executive at MRWA, said: “Recycle Right was launched to help highlight recycling options that people have and ultimately increase the region’s recycling rate. The campaign and all the messaging is a reminder to everyone about what they can recycle and where they can recycle it.

“A lot of us do the right things most of the time, but with the region’s recycling level at 35% there is more we can all do.”

BBC One TV show filmed at Bucks recycling centre

BBC show Money for Nothing is currently being filmed at High Wycombe and Beaconsfield household waste and recycling centres (HWRCs), which is run by FCC Environment.

The show sees presenter Sarah Moore save everyday items that people have taken to their local HWRCs and transform them into valuable items which are then sold, with any profit being returned to the person who originally disposed of the item.

James Reseigh, contract manager at FCC Environment, said: “The concept behind Money for Nothing is a fantastic way to show the public that there is still value in items that people may consider rubbish.

“It has been a pleasure to have the team at our High Wycombe and Beaconsfield sites filming, and we are really looking forward to seeing what the items are transformed into and how much they can get for them when the show airs.”

Wakefield and YPO partner for fleet procurement

Wakefield council has partnered with YPO to set up a framework to help local authorities procure fleets, including refuse collection vehicles (RCVs).

YPO is publicly owned by 13 local authorities, with a wide range of products and frameworks.

In partnership with Wakefield council, it has published a framework including a range of vehicles including RCVs, ambulances and other public sector vehicles.

YPO offers a framework that runs until October 2023. Providers have been appointed onto a framework agreement for the supply of purchase, hire and lease of specialist vehicles and associated services which will cover vehicles from 3.5 tonne and over in weight.

Some of the suppliers included in the framework are Dennis Eagle Ltd, Fan Zoeller (UK) Ltd, GO Plant Fleet Services Ltd and others.

The framework can be accessed by all public sector bodies including local authorities, NHS, housing associations, education establishments and blue light services.
