Local Green Points awarded Torbay contract
Local Green Points has been appointed to operate a recycling incentive scheme on behalf of Torbay council in South Devon.

The incentive scheme has been launched after Torbay council successfully applied for funding under an £11 million recycling reward scheme from the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG).
The project, which is wholly funded by the DCLG scheme, will enable Torbay’s 65,000 households to collect reward points in exchange for recycling their household waste from summer 2015.
Residents will earn points based on ‘positive waste behaviours’ and can also attempt to win prizes including iTunes and Marks & Spencer vouchers.
Graham Simmonds, managing director for Local Green Points, said: “I’m delighted to be working with the team at Torbay Council on this exciting new English Riviera initiative which will help drive up recycling rates and provide much-needed support for community projects as well as local businesses.”
FCC wins Torfaen HWRC contract
Waste services provider FCC Environment has been awarded a contract to operate and manage a household waste recycling centre (HWRC) and waste transfer station on behalf of Torfaen borough county council.
The seven-year deal, which began on April 1, will see the firm introduce new waste streams such as mattress and carpet recycling at the Pontypool HWRC.
FCC, which already manages 87 facilities on behalf of 60 local authorities in the UK, will aim to boost Torfaen’s recycling rate – which has set itself a 75% target.
The also includes the routine maintenance and transportation of specific contract waste streams from the site to the Waste Transfer Station and the council’s reprocessing or final disposal facilities.
Richard Belfield, FCC group development manager, said: “We are extremely pleased to be working with Torfaen borough county council to offer residents a wider range of services which will help to improve the area’s recycling rates.
“FCC Environment is the leading operator of household waste recycling centres in the UK. We know that our experience and expertise will help to significantly improve recycling rates in Torfaen in a cost effective way.”
Councillor John Cunningham, executive member for neighbourhood services at Torfaen council, added: “Our previous household waste recycling centre was built in the 1980s and was too small to cope with the range of materials we are now required to recycle.
“Our new and improved site can handle a higher volume of materials and we look forward to working with FCC Environment to meet our future recycling targets.”
GNET wins North Lincolnshire waste contract
A North-East waste firm has been awarded a £25 million contract to treat municipal refuse on behalf of North Lincolnshire council for a period of five years.

Green North East Trading Bidco Ltd (GNET) will process around 47,000 tonnes of residual waste at its refuse-derived fuel (RDF) production facility in Stockton on Tees.
The council currently collects its black bag waste in-house, before disposing of it at a number of Biffa-run landfill sites.
This latest contract intends to divert the amount of residual waste sent to landfill by 90%, and is set to commence from April 1 2016. The contract could be extended for up to 10 years.
North Lincolnshire originally received two tender responses for the contract, from GNET and Transwaste Recycling & Aggregates Ltd.
A report approved by the council’s cabinet designated that the GNET bid delivered ‘the lowest short and long term cost solution for dealing with residual municipal waste’. The annual cost of the contract from the first year is estimated to be £4.56 million, rising to £5.24m in the fifth year.
The report adds that the use of RDF in an ‘advanced thermal treatment’ plant that generates electricity to feed into the National Grid, as well as payment to GNET based on a fixed cost per tonne of waste, were factors in the decision.
Meanwhile, the associated development of a Waste Transfer Station will likely see the creation of “a number of additional posts”.
The council is also considering procuring a materials recycling facility (MRF) separate to the residual waste treatment contract. At present, dry recyclables in North Lincolnshire are handled by SITA UK.
