Recoup report aims to boost plastics recyclability

Plastics recycling body Recoup has this week (March 16) published the updated version of its Recyclability by Design report, the fifth version of the guide.

The guide looks at every stage of the recycling process, covering all forms of rigid plastic packaging including plastic bottles and rigid plastic pots, tubs and trays, and seeks to promote recycling that is more environmentally sound and commercially viable once it becomes waste.

It is aimed at encouraging plastic packaging producers to give greater emphasis to recyclability of products at the design stage.

The latest edition includes an up-to-date layout as well as case studies from Recoup members including Linpac, Nampak, Closed Loop and RPC.

Commenting on the document Recoup, packaging technologist, Paul East, who compiled the 76-page document, said: “The new version has been well supported by a collaboration of Recoup members and contacts from across the supply chain.

“By contributing their knowledge and time to produce new chapters, the aim is to both increase the awareness of recyclability and also provide a positive view of plastic packaging, by provoking debate about the sustainable functionally of packaging.”

Stuart Foster, Recoup chief executive, added: “It is inevitable that better design of products for recycling will be needed to achieve longer term circular economy goals, and we fully expect this element of any new EU resource proposals to be retained or even strengthened.”
