The new facility will be situated on a site owned by food manufacturers Halberton Poultry at Clayland's Corner in Somerset, with the two companies working in partnership on the project.

Halberton will provide the infrastructure and building for the plant, while TEG will install and operate the technology. The facility will use TEG's in-vessel “silo cage” composting system.
TEG has said that the plant will be operational by the end of 2006, dealing with 8,000 tonnes of organic waste every year, producing about 5,500 tonnes of “EnVigro” fertiliser.
Mick Fishwick, chief executive at TEG, said: “This is another important building block in the development of the TEG business. It is with great satisfaction that we and Halberton have finally achieved planning permission at the Clayland's Corner site.”
TEG's Silo Cage system involves treating food waste in a continuous flow over a period of up to 14 days, subject to temperatures sufficient to render any potential hazards in the material harmless. Resulting compost can then be matured for between eight and 21 days before use.
Preston
TEG already operates two commercial-scale plants – at Preston and Perthshire. The Preston site was approved under the animal by product regulations in January (see letsrecycle.com story), and the company is currently in the process of increasing its capacity to 14,000 tonnes per annum.
Two other plants – in Kildare, Ireland, and in Swansea – are now under construction, while TEG is also well underway to establishing a plant in Norfolk.
Mr Fishwick added: “At the end of last year we achieved animal by- product approval from the State Veterinary Service for our Preston site and that has opened new high volume markets for TEG from the major waste management companies, supermarkets and multinational food processors.”
At the back end of the Clayland's Corner facility, TEG will also be providing fertiliser screening, blending and bagging facilities. Halberton will distribute the fertiliser product through its logistics business.
