Countrystyle wins 3m WLWA contract

The contract, which is worth an estimated 3 million with an option to extend a further two years, will see Countrystyle treat up to 30,000 tonnes of separate green waste and up to 30,000 tonnes of mixed food and green waste from the six London boroughs of Brent, Ealing, Harrow, Hillingdon, Hounslow and Richmond.

The agreement comes after WLWA signed a 25-year contract with a SITA UK-led consortium in November last year for the treatment and disposal of residual waste in the area, worth an estimated 1.4 billion over its duration (see letsrecycle.com story).

The Maidstone-based firm will use its fleet to provide haulage of all materials from the three waste transfer stations in West London, which have been recently renewed to meet environmental standards.

From there, mixed food and green waste will be treated at Countrystyles in-vessel composting facility in Ridham, Kent, where it will be processed into a PAS 100 certified product. Green waste will be taken for treatment in open windrow facilities.

Chris Howard, Countrystyle Recyclings managing director, welcomed the deal as a great win for the company.

Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, chair of the West London Waste Authority added: Food and garden waste composting is key to achieving our objective of recycling 50% of waste by 2020. We look forward to a successful partnership with Countrystyle Recycling.

In August last year, Countrystyle was awarded an interim biowaste contract to treat an estimated 30,000 tonnes of mixed food and green waste from three of four Buckinghamshire district councils (see letsrecycle.com story).

And, in 2012, the company transferred its management and development rights of four anaerobic digestion plants to Tamar Energy, which acquired ten sites from the company (see letsrecycle.com story).
