50m deal agreed for York recycling and waste services

Recycling services in York are set to continue under current operator Yorwaste, under a new 50m contract.

Council-owned Yorwaste signed on the dotted line yesterday (April 23) to handle the City of York's recycling services for another five years, as well as waste disposal for another 15 years.

The company, owned by the City of York council and North Yorkshire county council, has run waste services in the city since the waste management services were privatised in 1990.

John Miller, Yorwaste’s recycling and external affairs manager, said: “We are obviously delighted to have been reappointed by City of York council. This is a very important contract for us and will require us to process and/or dispose of about 112,000 tonnes of household and commercial waste each year.

“The kerbside source-separated waste will be handled at our Hessay facility, but most of the rest, including the green waste, will be processed or disposed of at our Harewood Whin site.

“We aim to recycle at least 40% of the total volume of waste processed, in line with our goal of not wasting waste.”

York recycled 24.1% of its waste in 2005/06 – above its target of 18%.

Under the contract, materials collected by Yorwaste will include fridges, plastic bottles, paper, glass, cans and green waste.
