Hertsmere council, as part of Hertfordshire's ongoing waste awareness campaign, is organising a series of “comedy roadshows” at supermarkets in the area to encourage residents to reduce, re-use and recycle.
The council needs to recycle 14% of its waste by 2004 to hit government targets and hopes that by encouraging residents to make small lifestyle changes it will be able to achieve this.
The council is encouraging residents to start home composting and to use the local recycling facilities in a bid to increase its recycling rate. The council is also encouraging the public to use a reusable bag for their shopping and buy refill packs and products with recycled content or minimal packaging.
Hertsmere is part of Hertfordshire's waste awareness campaign which is a partnership venture between the eleven authorities in Hertfordshire to encourage residents to take part in recycling schemes and raise awareness about the need to manage waste effectively.
The councils are currently working to tackle the waste problem by developing a joint waste strategy for Hertfordshire. The strategy will establish how the county will manage waste disposal and recycling in the future.
The roadshows are being supported by the Hertfordshire Environmental Landfill Partnership (HELP) which administers funding from the landfill tax credits scheme.
