SITA wins North Lincolnshire waste contract

North Lincolnshire council has awardeda seven-year waste collection contract to waste management firm SITA UK Ltd.

The deal is worth 1.6 million per year over its life, SITA will take over the contract, which starts in November 2012, from the councils previous contractor Palm Recycling.

Under the terms of the deal, SITA will be responsible collecting material for recycling from households at the kerbside as well as at sites and from the districts household waste recycling centres (HWRCs).

Materials collected from the kerbside include glass, aluminium, paper and card, plastic bottles, textiles andgarden waste. The council is also one of the few in the county to collectsmall waste electrical and electronic equipment from households (WEEE). Recyclables are collected separatelyfrom seven different containers.

According to the council, residents will see little change in service once SITA takes over, butthe contractwill bring both financial and environmental improvements, withboth partiessharing therevenue received from the sale of recyclable material.

The council also hopes that as a result of the financial arrangement with the contractor the deal will incentivise both parties to increase the tonnage of materials recycled, and incur savings through reducing the amount of waste that it sends to landfill.

Councillor Nigel Sherwood, North Lincolnshire councils cabinet member for Highways and neighbourhood, said: This contract is very significant as it will set the boundaries for recycling over the next seven years. Many residents are recycling regularly but there are those that dont bother and it is these people we need to target to find out why this is and somehow try and encourage them to do so.

The contract will see the North Lincolnshire council and SITA working together to encourage residents and businesses to recycle more of their waste – through education and joint campaigns.
