Under the terms of the three-year contract, Straight will manufacture and supply the DWP with around 200,000 new containers to be used as part of the standardised recycle for Dorset collection service being put in place across the county.
All households are set to receive a 7-litre kitchen caddy and a 23-litre kerbside caddy for the indoor and outdoor collection of food waste, a 55-litre kerbside box for the collection of glass bottles and jars and properties unable to store a wheeled bin will receive a 44-litre kerbside box.
Householders will also receive a 240-litre wheeled bin for recyclables and a 140-litre wheeled bin for residual waste, which will be supplied by Craemer UK.
Dorset Waste Partnership
The DWP, established in December 2010, represents seven Dorset councils – Dorset county council, Christchurch borough council, East Dorset district council, North Dorset district council, Purbeck district council, West Dorset district council and Weymouth & Portland borough council.
The Partnership is establishing a single collection scheme to replace the 12 separate systems in operation across the region, apart from in Bournemouth and Poole.
Steve Burdis, director of the DWP, said: We are very much looking forward to working with Straight plc as the supplier of our food waste containers and recycling boxes for the new recycle for Dorset collection service. We believe that Dorset residents will be delighted with their new containers, which will help them to recycle more at the kerbside as we look to boost Dorsets recycling rate to 65% by 2015.
Plans for the new service were outlined in October 2011 (see letsrecycle.com story), with households set to receive a weekly food waste collection, a fortnightly collection of recyclables including paper, plastics, cardboard, tins and cans, aerosols and glass bottles, a fortnightly residual waste collection and an optional fortnightly garden waste collection.
Rollout
Householders will begin receiving their new recycling containers from October 2012, which will also coincide with the DWPs rollout of the new collection scheme, which is expected to be completed by 2014.
