High Peak to expand recycling collections by 22,000 homes

The contract, which is for an initial three-year period, is in addition to the 12,500 homes already served by Abitibi-Consolidated in the southern half of the borough. This borough is located north west of Derbyshire, between Manchester and Sheffield.

Local residents in Glossop, Hayfield, New Mills, Whaley Bridge, Chinley, Buxworth and Castleton in the Hope Valley will now receive a similar service to their neighbours.

The deal includes fortnightly collections of newspapers and magazines, glass, cans, textiles and shoes, in addition to their existing paper collections. The material will be reprocessed at Alcan, Berryman and Corus and textiles will go to the Salvation Army.

Commenting on the new contract, managing director of Abitibi-Consolidated Recycling Europe, Ron Humphreys, said the deal would build on the success of recycling collections in the High Peak area, which had increased by 2% since September 2003.

“More than 1,300 tonnes has been recycled in that time and we are confident that the additional 22,000 homes for which we are now responsible for will lead to a further significant increase in High Peak's recycling rate,” said Mr Humphreys.

High Peak borough Council and partners, Abitibi Consolidated Recycling, celebrated the launch of the kerbside collection to the north of the borough on Wednesday by presenting a donation to Save The Children.

Councillor Anne Worrall, High Peak's member for the environment, and Chris Demetrious from Abitibi Consolidated Recycling presented a cheque for 1,300 to Kay Kendall from Save The Children.

Councillor Anne Worrall said: “I am really pleased to launch the kerbside scheme into the north of the borough. We can at least double our figures on last year. I am also delighted to present this generous donation from Abitibi to Save The Children.”
