Shanks and WRG shortlisted for Berkshire waste contract

The “re3” project in Berkshire has announced that Shanks and Waste Recycling Group (WRG) are the preferred two bidders for its recycling and waste disposal contract.

Re3 is a partnership between Bracknell Forest council, Reading borough council and Wokingham district council. The three councils are set to work with each other for the next 25 years in an attempt to increase recycling and composting and reduce the amount of waste produced in the area.

Shanks and Waste Recycling Group have both been invited to prepare and submit a best and final offer for the contract. The Councils intend to evaluate bid submissions in the run up to the New Year and then select a preferred bidder.

Andrew Withey, spokesperson for the re3 project, said: “Once the bids have been evaluated and a decision has been made the council will negotiate with the preferred bidder with a target for reaching financial and contractual close by the end of March 2005.”

The partnership between Bracknell Forest borough council, Reading borough council and Wokingham district council provides service for 160,000 households and the three councils manage a combined 207,000 tonnes of household waste every year.

In 2003/04 16% of household waste was recycled by the three councils. Government recycling targets for 2005/06 are Bracknell Forest 27%, Reading 24% and Wokingham 33%.

The councils have several years' experience of working together already and this relationship has been solidified through the development of a joint municipal waste management strategy.

The three councils launched the re3 project under the strap line remember, reduce, reuse, recycle, repeat.
