John May, director of the unit, said: “As far as we are concerned, nothing changes. The packaging regulations have not gone away. We have capacity and will have five steel plants in which we can recycle material.”
But, the unit is likely to have to move its base which is currently at the Ebbw Vale works which are to be closed.
Corus's statement today said that it will now be able to focus on the implementation of its restructuring announcement and, together with unions and government, “support those affected and their communities.”
Under the packaging waste regulations, Corus is one of several companies that can issue packaging waste recovery notes (PRNs) for steel. Other UK issuers include ASW and the detinner AMG Resources. Large numbers of export PRNs are also issued via the large metal recycling companies such as European Metal Recycling and SimsMetal.
