WRAP chief helps out at kerbside while ministers scrutinise business plan

WRAP chief executive Jennie Price went to Bristol today to try her hand at kerbside recycling. The visit came as the organisation is waiting to hear whether or not ministers have approved its business plan.

The hope is that approval will be given before a General Election is called, otherwise WRAP, which has been formed as an arms-length government company, could be left without an agreed plan for several months.

But WRAP is pressing at a fast pace, communications director Kurt Calder assured letsrecycle. And, he added: “We had an excellent response to our draft business plan and some of the comments will be reflected in the final version which is with ministers.”

The organisation is set to move soon from London to new offices in Banbury and is in the processing of recruiting eight additional staff on top of six already in post.

Executive directors are also expected to be appointed next month. But, WRAP has already lost one of its four existing directors because Philip Ward, the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions' nominee leaving the department's waste division. He is being replaced at DETR by Richard Bird who is expected to be offered the chance to replace Mr Ward on Wrap.

WRAP, the Waste and Resources Action Programme, was created by government last year to spur on the development of markets for recyclable materials.
