Onyx secures Wycombe Council work for hat trick of contracts

Onyx has been awarded a nine-year refuse collection contract by Wycombe District Council worth 2 million per year, following on from an existing contract..

Under the contract Onyx will work in partnership with the council to develop the kerbside collection of paper. Ecovert currently runs this service although Onyx will take it over in 2003.

A separate collection for gardening waste will also be introduced. Onyx already runs a pilot composting scheme where between four and 12 tonnes of green waste is collected fortnightly from 550 houses. This is composted at two sites in the District.

Keith Riley, managing director of Onyx Greater London and South, said: “At Onyx we are able to introduce a fully integrated service to our clients. This is particularly important as Wycombe District Council needs to meet very demanding targets to ensure that less waste is going to landfill. We can also benefit from our experience of other successful contracts where government targets have been exceeded in the past.”

Cllr Chris Oliver, chairman of the Council’s planning, environment and transportation committee, added: “There will be obvious benefits for residents. The staff know their rounds and have overcome many of the problems that our hilly terrain and crowded streets present.”

The contract is the third secured by Onyx in recent weeks. At the beginning of February the company announced it had won work from Hastings Borough Council to collect paper from 26,000 properties. The service starts in April and will be in addition to Onyx’s current refuse collection and grounds maintenance contract with the borough.

Onyx has also announced it has gained the seven-year waste collection and recycling contract for Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, worth 2 million per annum.
