First reverse vending recycling machine installed in Lancashire
The machine collects, compacts and stores used beverage containers and issues a ‘deposit reward' voucher with a face value of 5 pence for each unit recycled. The vouchers can be redeemed in the new Grads Café Canteen in the Central Hub at the college, which is an associated college of Lancaster University. The installation of the reverse vending machine is the latest initiative to come out of the college's new University Centre, which became the first building in Blackpool to be awarded pre-construction BREEAM Excellence for its sustainable design and environmental performance.

Selby issues residents information on new recycling collections
Selby District Council is sending every household in the district details of new recycling and bin collections ahead of the alternate weekly collection system being introduced in October.
The new scheme is being operated by services firm Enterprise Managed Services and is set to allow residents to recycle a range of household plastics for the first time, such as bottles, yoghurt pots and food trays. Households are set to be issued a separate plastic box for the plastics. The alternate weekly collection service will see recyclable materials collected one week and residual waste materials collected the next, while the existing fortnightly garden greens collections will continue as normal.
Councillor Chris Metcalfe, chair of the council's environment board, said: “Every effort has been taken to try and match your new collections with the same day of the week you currently leave out your waste. But please read the details in Citizenlink and Rethink Rubbish carefully, to make sure you know when your recycling and refuse bins will be collected.”
South Coast business park signs waste management contract
Regional technology parks operator Fasset, which runs 42-acre Langstone Technology Park at Havant, near Portsmouth, appointed Fareham-based TJ Waste & Recycling to remove all of the Havant site's everyday waste, including plastics, paper, cardboard and aluminium cans, and recycle as much as possible. Materials are collected twice-weekly for sorting at TJ's waste transfer station at Harts Farm Way, Havant, before being recycled by third parties.
Cyril Campbell, Fasset's environmental advisor, said: “TJ is providing a competitively priced complete waste management system for Langstone Technology Park, which, in common with all large business parks, has general waste challenges. For example, in the first five months of this year 118 tonnes went to landfill, although this was a welcome decrease of 26.5 tonnes over the same period last year because of our on-site recycling initiatives.”
Northampton ‘rubbish amnesty' hailed a success
A total of 44.5 tonnes of waste and bulky items have been collected by Northampton borough council during a three-day ‘rubbish amnesty' earlier this month.
The scheme, which ran from Tuesday September 1 to Friday September 4, was intended to offer residents a chance to dispose of and recycle items as part of a one-off initiative. Bulky items collected in the Blackthorn, Goldings, Southfield and Thorplands areas of Northampton included 66 car tyres, 19 fridges and 49 televisions. The borough council said it would continue to encourage communities to recycle where possible and to dispose of their waste in a responsible way. It also said environmental wardens and crime officers remained committed to patrolling areas throughout Northampton, to investigate incidents and to prosecute fly-tippers.
Councillor Trini Crake, cabinet member for environment, said: “The amnesty initiative was clearly successful and the good news is that by focusing the activities of the existing Streetcare Teams to specific areas, it has allowed us to complete the clean-up within normal working hours and with no extra funds being allocated.”
SITA UK announces appointments at Isle of Man EfW
New regional manager for the Isle of Man, Tim Otley, who is also general manager of SITA Power, will be responsible for the overall management of SITA IoM's contract with the island's Department of Local Government and the Environment (DoLGE) and will act as the key contact for DoLGE on contractual issues. Darren Thomas has been promoted to the role of plant manager and is now responsible for the overall management for the site, including safety, environmental and health issues, and financial performance, while Gavin Halls has been recruited to the post of maintenance manager, responsible for maintaining the 60,000 tonnes-a-year capacity EfW facility along with a team of six skilled technicians.
