letsrecycle.com launches renewables website

A website offering up-to-the-minute news on renewable energy in the UK has been officially launched today by the team behind letsrecycle.com.

Newenergyfocus.com is devoted to the low carbon energy market and is freely available to anyone with an interest in sustainable energy issues.

The site offers a unique news and information service, according to editor James Cartledge, who was formerly news editor of letsrecycle.com.

He said: “We'll be linking industry with suppliers, researchers, regulators and legislators. Now that the core news service and recruitment section are up and running, we'll introduce an online chat forum in a bid to promote interaction within the sector; a classified section for tenders and product notices, as well as a comprehensive industry directory.”

Domestic

While also reporting international news, NewEnergyFocus provides a particular domestic focus, regularly updating the latest news and information for those in the UK alternative energy market.

The site is targeted at a wide audience – from large-scale electricity giants and fuel companies to small-scale micro generators, as well as their associated supply chains; energy buyers from industry and public sector organisations; regulators, planners and legislators in local authorities; regional development organisations, agencies and government; researchers, academics, NGOs, trade associations and lobbyists.

Mr Cartledge explained that the website launches at a time when the UK energy industry is going through a massive upheaval.

Consumption

He said: “As energy consumption continues to grow each year, we will need to replace around 30-35 GW of aging coal and nuclear power stations, as well as hit renewable energy generation and carbon emissions targets to combat climate change.

“Europe has already agreed a legally-binding EU-wide target of 20 percent of its energy to come from renewable sources by 2020 and the UK is facing a national target to triple its renewable energrate to achieve a 15 percent rate by 2020.

“There are also carbon emissions targets to contend with – the UK is already working under the European Emissions Trading Scheme for large-scale energy users to limit their emissions. Further measures are expected for smaller energy users. The government is currently aiming at a 60 percent cut in carbon emissions by 2050, with pressure to increase this target towards 80 percent.

“Meanwhile, the global market is now being hit by record-high oil prices, and the issue of energy security is also bringing the need for more renewable energy centre stage in the UK,” he added.

Investment

Despite challenges relating to planning, financing and engineering, Mr Cartledge explained that at the end of 2007 the UK was confirmed as the second most attractive country in the world for investment in renewable energy behind the USA.

He said: “For offshore wind energy projects alone, analysts believe up to £30bn of investment will be available in the next 15 years in this country.”

NewEnergyFocus.com provides daily insight into the development of this flourishing sector, with balanced coverage of the key industry issues.

The site offers news on changing legislation, developing technology, market trends and industry activities, from renewable energy industry sectors including developments in bio energy (including biomass and bio fuels), geothermal, hydroelectricity, marine (tidal and wave) solar and wind power.

As well as alternative electricity issues, the new site also covers the important work in the two other major energy sectors – heat and transport fuels.

It looks at issues involving micro generation projects, developments in nuclear power, energy efficiency and fuel cell technology that have an impact on the move away from using fossil fuels in the UK.

“We'll help companies in the renewable energy sector seeking to raise their profile, from the smallest SME to the largest energy giants, linking them up with others in the sector and helping them find the information necessary for their developing business,” said James Cartledge.

“Our coverage will be supportive of the move towards cleaner energy as the key component of a strategy to reduce emissions, cut air pollution and improve energy security.  But, as a fully independent news service, we won't refrain from presenting a range of different views on the best way forward for sustainable energy in the UK,” he added.
