Mr Palmer-Jones, who has previously spent 12 years working in Europe for both SITA Sweden and SITA France, also serves as the chairman of the UKs Environmental Services Association (ESA) but is due to step down from the position in November this year.
Commenting on his appointment, Mr Palmer-Jones said he was looking forward to creating a more circular European economy and promoting recycling and reuse.
He said: “I am honoured to have been asked to take this role, and excited about the possibilities that lie in our future. The challenge facing Europes industries today is how to achieve sustainable growth in a resource-efficient and environmentally sound way.
The key to doing this is to make the European economy more circular, so that waste is reduced and what remains is re-used or recycled into new products, or used to generate energy. I am very much looking forward to this challenge.”
The SITA UK chief executive was announced as successor to the post yesterday (June 17) by outgoing FEAD president Peter Kurth. Mr Kurth will continue his work as one of two vice-presidents after more than three years as president.
Achievements
Reflecting on his time as president, Mr Kurth said FEAD had accomplished many important achievements during his tenure.
He said: Today over 80 % of the national environmental legislation is shaped by the EU. The importance of FEAD grew over the last years, as a competent partner in all waste related matters.
We have successfully engaged ourselves in the comprehensive revision of the European waste policy and the readjustment of the European funding policy. In the revision of the public procurement legislation, we have also ensured that the market is kept open for private waste management companies.

He added: We welcome David’s experience and leadership to the FEAD community. In his new role as FEAD president, he will be responsible for implementing the new FEAD Strategy for 2014-2020 and leading FEADs engagement with the European institutions.
