Membership organisation Envirobusiness has launched its second Invest in Recycling initiative which could see handouts of £134,000 allocated to firms to create new waste recycling capacity.
And, the Waste and Resources Action Programme is offering grants of up to £67,000 to help recycling companies extend their services to businesses.
The schemes are designed to help boost recycling in the South East, which sends the majority of its 25 million tonnes of waste to landfill- a figure which is rising by 3% each year.
Accelerate
The Environbusiness scheme, which is funded by the South East Deevelopment Agency (SEEDA), is aimed to accelerate recycling in the region and are specifically targeted at businesses who handle construction and demolition wastes, paper, card, and organic material such as food waste.
The competition follows the success of the 2006 Invest in Recycling scheme in which five businesses – including Kent plastics recycler PPR Wipag and Sussex composting firm the Woodhorn Group – received “substantial funding” to expand their activities.
Carol Blake, director of commercial waste management Impact Recycling, which received funding last year, said: “The grant we received through Invest in Recycling cleared a major bottleneck in our business. The new equipment has allowed us to greatly increase our capacity and more than treble our business.”
Collections
Under WRAP's business recycling scheme, meanwhile, businesses are being encouraged to develop recycling schemes for primarily small and medium sized businesses (SMEs).
This can include collections if food waste from restaurants and shops, glass collections from bars and multi-material collections.
WRAP will fund a maximum of 50% of the total project costs and will expected applicants to match this.
To apply for either funding scheme, potential applicants are advised to register their interest and attend one of two briefing events to be held on October 9 in Oxford and October 11 at Gatwick.
