Run by Sustainable Wales, the campaign aims to encourage parents to consider modern cotton re-usable nappies as a more environmentally friendly alternative to disposables.
About 40 million is spent annually on the collection and disposal of 800,000 tonnes of nappy waste throughout the UK, according to a report by Sustainable Wales.
The Welsh Assembly Government has given 13,455 to the campaign to help fund a development officer post to establish real nappy pilot projects across Wales.
Speaking at the launch of the campaign, Welsh environment minister Su Essex said: “Disposable nappies are a increasing problem in our landfill sites, and make up between 4% and 7% of household waste. Education is another key element of the strategy, and if we want to promote a shift in culture, it is important to raise awareness. Maternity staff, for example, can play a key role, passing on good practise and influencing families.”
Support for the campaign has also been given by Cardiff, Torfaen, Caerphilly and Bridgend councils. Hopes are that the “Gentle Touch” nappy laundering service, already successfully operating in several areas of south-east Wales, will be able to expand because of the campaign.
