Four vie for West Sussex recycling and waste contract

Four waste management contractors are to present their tender proposals in January to West Sussex County Council for an estimated 100-150 million contract.

The four are thought to be Biffa, Onyx, Sita and Viridor. Viridor and Onyx recently competed against each other for work in East Sussex and Brighton with Onyx winning out. If Onyx was to be successful in West Sussex it would give the firm work in three counties in a row – the other two being East Sussex and Hampshire.

SITA also has work nearby, having won the Surrey contract. It also operations in West Sussex including a MRF at Sompting. Biffa has landfill sites in the region and a contract for waste management on the Isle of Wight. For Viridor, should it be successful, the contract would be a major breakthrough in the region.

The successful contractor will manage and plan waste handling, recycling and composting facilities as well as the redevelopment and installation of new civic amenity sites and MRFs. The contract demands that ways are found for West Sussex to boost its recycling rates and develop markets for collected recyclables.
