Baylis launches household plastic bottle recycling service

A newly-accredited plastics reprocessor in Berkshire is seeking local authorities in the south of England to provide plastic bottles for recycling, writes Adam Hooker.

Bracknell-based Baylis Recycling is offering to collect plastic bottles and HDPE from councils across the Southern region, and will pay for the collections.

” We believe the 10-year fixed contract option offered by the scheme is unique in this marketplace and there is already strong interest from local authorities.“
– Chris Baylis, Baylis Recycling

The launch of the service follows Baylis' installation of a new 3 million plastics reprocessing facility, which includes washing and flaking machinery and compound lines with a reprocessing capacity of up to 15,000 tonnes each year (see letsrecycle.com story).

Initially, the firm will be seeking local authorities in the south east of England and London before eventually expanding to provide collection services for the whole of the south. Baylis also has depots in the north of England and Scotland, and a spokesman for the company said that taking the scheme nationwide could be something for the future.

The company is proposing 10-year fixed contracts as an option for interested local authorities, with market index-linked pricing and quarterly reviews also possibilities.

“We believe the 10-year fixed contract option offered by the scheme is unique in this marketplace,” said Baylis Recycling managing director Chris Baylis, “and there is already strong interest from local authorities.”

Baylis will be installing compactors and balers at waste collection sites where needed, in an attempt to optimise the collection of plastic in the area.

Efficient

Baylis believe a regionally-centred, multiple depot collection and recycling scheme is faster and more efficient, saving time and money. The company also said that the shorter supply chain measurably reduces the environmental impact. Plastic reprocessed by Baylis Recycling is used by manufacturers throughout the UK making products then sold in the UK.

Before announcing the scheme, Baylis Recycling sought advice from the Waste Resource Action Programme (WRAP). Commenting on the new service, WRAP materials sector manager Paul Davidson said: “Our message in a bottle campaign highlights the importance of local councils collecting plastic bottles.

“There are sustainable markets for these plastic bottles, and collecting them is an affordable way of contributing to local authority targets. It is also environmentally the right thing to do,” he added.
