From September 1 2006 he will then succeed John May as manager of the organisation, Mr May is to retire in early 2007.
Commenting on his appointment, Mr Williams said: “I am delighted to be heading up the Corus Steel Packaging Recycling team at such an exciting time in the industry and in our own strategy. I look forward to the next stage in this strategy as we shift our focus onto larger scale recycling projects with greatest potential yield in terms of tonnage of steel cans collected.”
Mr Williams joined Corus in 1997, when it was known as British Steel, as regional representative for the North and Scotland.
During his time with Corus, David has been instrumental in developing the organisation's recycling development strategy of investing steel PRN funds in local, sustainable and successful steel recycling initiatives.
John May
Mr May has worked in the steel industry for over 30 years, 26 in the packaging sector where he worked with all areas of the packaging chain. As well as being an appointed member of the Advisory Committee on Packaging he is also a member of the Management Committee of INCPEN. Mr May has been a Director of Valpak since 2002, where his term ends in July 2006.
Mr Williams added: “It is an honour to be taking over from John who has shown incredible commitment to the packaging industry over the last 26 years. The team, and everyone in the industry who knows John, will greatly miss his enthusiasm and wish him all the best for this forthcoming retirement.”
The appointment of David Williams as manager is part of a wider reorganisation of the Corus Steel Packaging Recycling team, a progressive step which will see the team adopt a more centralised structure more appropriate for the next phase of its strategy, rather than the regional one it has operated to date. As a result of the restructure, two new positions have been created.
In July 2006, Robert Jenkins will join the team as Recycling Projects Manager and Gemma Stapleton will join as Accounts and Administration Officer. Garvin Freeman, currently Recycling Development Representative for the South and South West, will take over from David as Manager, Recycling Development.
