First online PRN trade takes place

The first online trade has taken place on the Environment Exchange, the UK’s “central marketplace” for buying and selling PRNs.

The trade saw Aylesford Newsprint selling paper PRNs – packaging waste recovery notes – during the letsrecycle.com Live! event at Stoneleigh last week.

Aylesford Newsprint was one of the first companies to join the Exchange and has used it on many occasions in the past.

The Environment Exchange provides online access to spot trading and future trading of PRNs – the evidence used in the UK's packaging producer responsibility system to show that packaging producers have invested in recycling and recovery of packaging waste.

Chris White, recycling manager for Aylesford Newpsrint, said: “This is an excellent system without effectively having to get a paper trail from them. Before we had to look at the prices and then phone the Exchange. Now we can carry out the transaction ourselves and simply print off the records to keep for our auditors.”

Angus Macpherson, managing director of the Exchange, said: “I am delighted that the first online trade has taken place. This is one of those projects that has been on the horizon for a long time. It comes at an appropriate time as there is much talk about online data within the Advisory Committee on Packaging.”

He explained that the aim of the Exchange is to provide an online marketplace “for compliance schemes, obligated companies, reprocessors, exporters and their representatives.

“A comprehensive range of current and historic trading information is available to participants and we offer trading in spot, switch and contracts up to one year forward,” Mr Macpherson.
