Wastepack pledges to work with SEPA to meet regulations in the future

Wastepack, the UK's second largest packaging waste scheme, has described as “pragmatic” the decision by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency that it failed to take “reasonable steps” to recover and recycle packaging waste in 2001.

A statement from the company this afternoon (April 15) said: “We welcome the pragmatic approach adopted by SEPA in reviewing our 2001 compliance activities. We look forward to working with SEPA to ensure that the objectives of the packaging waste regulations are met in the future.”

At the heart of the Wastepack approach to compliance is its belief that direct investment needs to be made as well as the purchase of PRNs to drive up recycling and recovery levels in the UK. Its official policy states: “Wastepack has a distinctive approach to meeting the regulatory requirements. Existing recycling was already economically viable before the regulations were introduced and only needs to be supported when commodity market prices of virgin materials are low. We believe, instead, that funds from industry should be mainly used to create new infrastructure to meet the higher future targets set by government.”
