Ipswich timber company fined for breaching packaging waste regulations

An Ipswich timber company has been fined 4,000 for failing to comply with the packaging waste regulations.

Timber importing company KDM International Plc of Hall Road, Kesgrave, Ipswich, Suffolk was fined a total of 4,000 and ordered to pay costs of 764.49 following a prosecution under the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations.

The company pleaded guilty at East Suffolk Magistrates Court to six offences for failing to register with the Environment Agency to take steps to recover and recycle packaging waste for the years 1998 and 1999, and failing to furnish a Certificate of Compliance for those years.

Commenting on the case, Area Environment Planning Manager Paul Hayward said: “The regulations are designed to help the UK meet its targets for recycling and recovery of waste. By ignoring the regulations KDM International have wasted an opportunity to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. The Environment Agency is increasing its effort in this area and will not hesitate to prosecute companies who fail to meet their obligations. The courts are now recognising the seriousness of these offences and fining appropriately. Companies are asked to seek expert advice on the regulations at the earliest opportunity.”
